Last year, the fires reminded us how quickly life can change. We watched families lose homes, memories and stability overnight. And while the smoke has cleared a bit, many challenges are still here like rising costs, uncertainty and a world that can feel overwhelming at times.
That’s why She Ready Foundation still matters.
For foster youth, instability is not just a moment in time; it can feel like a way of life. I know that personally and it’s why this work is, and always will be, close to my heart. Through our programs like Life Leadership Academy, Paid Summer Internships and luggage giveaways, we restore dignity, confidence and hope.
Sometimes all a young person really needs is for someone to say: “I see you. I believe in you. Keep going.” And, that’s what we do.
And listen… if a foster kid from South Central LA can end up on the cover of Sports Illustrated in a swimsuit in her 40’s, then don’t tell me dreams can’t come true! Life has a funny way of surprising you when you keep believing, keep working and keep showing up.
That’s the message I want our kids to hear loud and clear: your beginning does not determine your ending. And when you think you can't: dream big anyway. Apply anyway. Create anyway. And anyway you can, walk into rooms like you belong -- because you do.
This year, we chose to gather differently. More intimate, intentional and connected. Because in difficult times community matters. And, being there for each other matters.
To our honorees, donors, partners, volunteers and every young person who trusts us along their journey, “thank you.” Your support let's us show up and thrive with you.
Now, let’s celebrate. Laugh a little, love on each other a lot, and have a good time because joy is a part of healing too.

Antwone Fisher is an author and advocate whose journey from foster care to success reflects resilience. After serving in the Navy, he turned his story into the memoir Finding Fish, later adapted into a film, and continues to uplift foster youth through his work.

Melissa Etheridge is a Grammy and Academy Award–winning artist known for her powerful voice and honesty. Beyond music, she advocates for health and recovery, founding The Etheridge Foundation to support treatment for opioid use disorder.

Suzan Hughes is a philanthropist and wellness leader who turned a difficult childhood into a lifelong mission to support vulnerable youth. From building a successful fitness career to leading the Herbalife Family Foundation, she has dedicated her work to helping children access care, education, and protection.

KYSHAWNA JOHNSON
Kyshawna Johnson is a Los Angeles–based author, motivational speaker, and advocate for foster youth and young adults.
A former foster youth herself, she speaks from lived experience about healing, resilience, and finding purpose through pain.
She is the author of DNA Exchange: The Pain of a Foster Child and is passionate about helping others turn their story into strength and voice.
KAREN leahy &
SADE leahy-andrews
Karen Leahy and her daughter, Sade Leahy-Andrews, share a moving story of foster care, adoption, healing, and hope. After welcoming Sade and her brother into her home in 2011, Karen created a loving foundation where resilience and connection could grow.
Today, through the support of the She Ready Foundation, Sade has found mentorship, confidence, and a renewed sense of belonging as she explores her future through the Life Skills Academy and internship program. Together, Karen and Sade beautifully represent the power of community, opportunity, and unconditional love.
Programs
SUMMER INTERNSHIP
She Ready Foundation SUMMER INTERNSHIP supports up to 20 youth in a paid entertainment industry summer internship. Youth go through a 10-12 week program with a broad curricula that includes writing, casting, acting, lighting, camera work, editing and soundtrack creation. Learning the basic elements of filmmaking, the cohort completes their time with the creation of a short film.
luggage giveaways
Ensures foster youth can transition with dignity, stability and personal ownership by providing luggage and hygiene products for their journey. She Ready Foundation distributed over 3,000 pieces of luggage in 2025-2026 in partnership with Friends of The Children and Rennervation Foundation and over the life of the foundation over 15,000 pieces have been distributed across the United States.
LIFE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
She Ready Foundation’s LIFE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY offers life-skills training focused on career, personal development, and wellness. The program begins with young people receiving soft skills to give them ACCESS into the job market.
From dressing for success and social media posting etiquette to financial literacy and building healthy work relationships, we prepare our youth for productive careers. Once they are ready to take on the challenge our partnership with the LA Urban League ELEVATES them into paid career training in Construction; Medical, Sports Management, Entertainment or Administration. This helps assure our young people are READY!
